Artists:
Valerie Keane

The intentions and tenor of Valerie Keane’s sculptures are congruent: quasimannerist models and caricatures of attitude—rotoscoped from emotion rather than image—that become exaggerated motifs of violence, anxiety, alienation and the absurd.

Abstracted and amputated, acrylics posture as rapid-prototyped stand-ins, which are at once illustrative and irrecoverable.

Inhabiting a territory between sculpture and scenography, Valerie Keane enacts staged settings influenced by the highly affected environments of casinos, theater, and diorama. Simultaneously citing the tactile slang of architectural prototypes and the functional specificity of fetish-toys, Keane’s installation for Frieze New York will exist in congruence to the inherent characteristics that constitute a contemporary art fair setting insofar as being formal, affected, fantasized and violent.

Born 1989 in Passaic New Jersey, Valerie Keane lives and works in New York. Recent exhibitions include High Art, Paris (Upcoming), Ubu Noir, Lomex, New York, 2016 (solo); Green Naftali, New York, 2015 (group); Tulipomania (curated by Jay Ezra), Daniele Balice, Paris Spells to Protect Against Unkind, Important Projects, Oakland, 2014 (Solo); The Grand Opening, Shoot the Lobster, New York, 2014 (group); All the Food Is Poison with Jeffrey Joyal, Bed-Stuy Love Affair, Brooklyn,
NY, 2014 (duo).
