Max Hooper Schneider

Max Hooper Schneider - HIGH ART
Just as the entirety of the natural world is subject to forces of continuous transformation, Max Hooper Schneider's artworks reveal states of metamorphosis taking place within macro and micro landscapes.

Comprised of natural and artificial objects collectively caught in states of flux, self-contained systems unpredictably expand within the confines of terrariums and vitrines, occupy the hollow spaces of household appliances and discarded industrial machinery, perch upon plinths scattered throughout the exhibition space, or rise from the floor in congealed masses of biomorphic wonder.

Employing the visual vocabulary of landscape as a vernacular for exploring broader themes of metabolic inertia, environmental collapse and late capitalist desire, Schneider embraces a Baroque maximalism of aesthetic excess. The grotesque and gratuitous, sublime and beautiful find form in evocations of half-decomposed rubbish heaps and calcified reefs whose countless strata of waste have sedimented into proto-biomes for emergent populations of flora and fauna.

Yielding unimaginable accumulations of matter, Schneider’s works serve as memorials to an entropic ecology of speculative ‘trans-habitats’. A post-human world in which alternate lifeforms germinate from the remnants of a bygone civilization and forge new beginnings amid the wreckage.
